From The Post-Standard (Syracuse):
Quote:

The New York Mets are showing "very real interest" in relocating their top minor league team to Syracuse, according to U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, who is actively lobbying for the move.

The senator said he spoke with Mets owner Fred Wilpon about the potential move of the baseball team's Triple-A affiliate from New Orleans to Syracuse for the 2009 season.

He said Wilpon agreed it seems like a perfect fit.

"They think that having teams in New York is to their benefit, and it would grow regional interest in the team and the fan base," Schumer, D-N.Y., said Thursday. The Mets have a Double-A team in Binghamton.

I don't know why it has taken MLB teams so long to work this out, but having your minor teams close to home seems to be a pretty good idea. The Nationals have a low-A team in Hagerstown and a AA team in Harrisburg - two hours apart from each other and three to four from D.C.. The Pirates have high-A in State College and AA in Altoona. The Phillies have AA in Reading and will have AAA in Allentown this year. Short distances just makes sense. Easier to call guys up or send guys down, easier to communicate and meet, easier to scout.... I'm all for this.

Well, Syracuse was with Toronto, which is about as close to SYR as NYC is. Now I don't understand why the Mets had the New Orleans team, so we agree there. It might have been because they were the only ones available at the time. At least they are looking to a closer team anyway. By the way, why is New Orleans on the Pacific Coast League? That's nowhere near the Pacific Coast!

I don't know. I personally think that Minor League Baseball needs to be entirely reorganized so that it makes sense. With MLB teams moving to closer affiliates, they're working on it.

Sounds good to me. I sorta think they should just have the whole AAA merge into one league, or at least have a few games against each other each season. When half of your league (PCL) is in New Mexico or east, you might want to change the name, same thing when the International League will soon be no longer international. Having a 30 team AAA would probably be best for all of the 30 MLB teams, it seems like it would give a better indication about the players' capabilities against all kinds of competition, not just a select few.

Like the AHL - it's a full league.

Exactly. I believe that helps the NHL more than a split AHL would. In fact I believe there were 2 leagues until recently when the other one (name slips my mind at the moment) folded and the AHL took the teams.

The AHL has 29 teams, meaning one AHL team covers two franchises...I forget who it is...

I'm sure they have expansion plans. ;)

Not sure what the plan is for Rochester...they're not going to be affiliated with Buffalo anymore

Rochester. Buffalo and Florida share that team. Seems like they should give them to the Sabres and get a team to Florida. I'm not sure where that team would go though, maybe Baltimore or Louisville?
