Favre Tells Packers He's Retiring

Yeah, it did. And Mario Lemieux's unretirement turned out to be a good thing, too. I'm not entirely sure why Jordan retired the first time. Did he think he was done? Did he think he could play baseball (because he really couldn't)?

But in order to keep doing well like Jordan and Lemieux, there has to be a team already there. Green Bay did well last year, but I'm not sure they can repeat it, even with Favre.

ESPN.com's Bill Williamson has a column on the Brett Favre saga, particularly where he might end up if he returns for someone other than the Packers.

My favorites:
Quote:

New England Patriots: It's not going to happen here. Let's move on.

Indianapolis Colts: See: New England.

Jordan retired because he said he had lost passion in playing, plus his father died recently before that...so it was a tough time for him.

Lemieux retired because of his lymphoma.

ESPN's Chris Mortenson is reporting that Brett Favre wants out of Green Bay.

Quote:

Three days after a conference call with Green Bay Packers team officials on Tuesday in which quarterback Brett Favre emphatically expressed his desire to play in 2008, Favre on Friday formally asked for his unconditional contractual release from the Packers in a letter, sources close to Favre and the team said.

The letter was sent by Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, via overnight mail on Thursday and arrived at the Packers facility Friday morning.

Cook, on behalf of Favre, expressed a desire to have an amicable parting, as the Packers have been reluctant to embrace his return. Favre announced his retirement in early March.

During a conference call on Tuesday that included Packers general manager Ted Thompson, Packers coach Mike McCarthy, Favre and Cook, sources say that the quarterback stated emphatically that he wanted to play again.

Favre was reminded by the Packers' brass that the quarterback said publicly and privately in March that he wasn't 100 percent committed to football, sources said. Favre acknowledged his state of mind at the time, but added that he never felt he was a 100 percent committed in March of previous years, either. Favre felt he had to make a decision to retire because the Packers were pressing him for an answer, a source said.

Well, if they don't want him back (and haven't been listening to him) and he still wants to play, that only makes sense for both sides.

If I'm Green Bay, though, I'm not sure I'd just want to release him. I'd much rather work with him to find a suitable team and make a trade. Why just dump one of the greatest quarterbacks of the era when you could get so much for him?

Why not answer his calls if he's one of the greatest quarterbacks of the era? They had their chance to talk to him, and they did nothing, now he's making it public to get something going.

I can't blame them though, yes he's great, and yes you need to take him if he wants to come back...but they got to be tired of Favre's retirement stuff. He's done this the last couple years, I guess they're tired of his charade.

No clue where he'd end up, maybe Minnesota, I've heard Carolina?

As long as the Packers have any say in it, he won't go to Minnesota, or any of the divisional foes. Carolina is on the schedule this year, so I doubt they'd want him going there either.

My guess is he'll end up in Baltimore.

One more reason to trade him rather than release him. If you release him, he can go wherever he pleases, and it could be a divisional foe.
