They haven't even played a match, and Women's Professional Soccer has added an expansion team. WPS announced yesterday that they have added a franchise in the city of Philadelphia to the league to begin play in 2010. The team will likely share facilities with the Major League Soccer team expanding into that league also in 2010; they are constructing a new soccer-specific stadium just south of the city in Chester, Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia franchise will be WPS' eighth announced team in the league. WPS is set to kickoff in April 2009 with sevens teams in seven cities. However, despite being the eighth team in the league, Philadelphia might be the ninth team to take the field. The league is still considering the possibility of adding an eighth team for its inaugural season. Expansion possibilities include the San Francisco Bay area; San Diego, California; Cary, North Carolina (currently served by USL W-League Carolina Railhawks); and Atlanta Georgia (currently served by USL W-League Atlanta Silverbacks).
