It's an interesting first step. On the agenda at today's City Commission meeting in Brownsville, TX is this item: R&G Capital LLC of Houston wants to start discussions towards making a deal with the city to purchase some land for a Sports Park complex. Among the facilities in this complex would be a 15,000 seat stadium that could be used for a pro soccer team.

R&G says it could double as an outdoor convert venue that would hold up to 25,000 folks and might put this city of 139,000 on the state's sports map.

Travel might seem to be an issue. Brownsville isn't near anywhere. For example, it is 356 miles south of Houston, a very successful MLS franchise. But everything in Texas seems to require long trips. And you can fly there with no problem.

Full article.

Brownsville will not at all be able to get an MLS team. It's too small and out of the way. However, I could see the possibility of the team getting a USL-1 franchise. The city could probably draw enough fans to make the team worthwhile. But I have to question the size of the stadium. Maybe a USL-2 team would be a better fit for Brownsville, but I highly doubt they'd be able to fill a 15,000 seat stadium for a USL-2 team. A 10,000-seater (designed for later expansion) would be a better idea and would allow more possibilities for a pro soccer tea
