With their postponement of a new scoreboard for the county's hockey arena still fresh, members of the Onondaga County Legislature began thinking Wednesday about erecting one for the county's baseball stadium.

Less than 24 hours after debating the hockey scoreboard, officials released the agenda for a committee meeting Tuesday that includes a proposal to borrow $1.28 million to replace the 12-year-old scoreboard at Alliance Bank Stadium.

The ballpark request was expected, although its timing surprised some legislators who still were dusting themselves off after the spirited War Memorial debate.

The lawmakers voted 15-3 Tuesday to borrow $9.1 million to make major repairs at the Onondaga County War Memorial and Crouse-Hinds Theater, but left out $717,000 that County Executive Joanie Mahoney's administration had earmarked for a scoreboard, leaving that decision for a later date.

The lease for the War Memorial's main tenant, the Syracuse Crunch, calls for replacing the scoreboard at the end of this hockey season.

Under an agreement signed this spring between Mahoney and the Syracuse Chiefs Alliance Bank Stadium's main tenant the ballclub had until July 15 to find a sponsor to help buy a scoreboard.

When that didn't happen, despite a 45-day extension granted by county officials, another clause kicked in stipulating that the county executive's office would launch a discussion with the Legislature about having the county buy the scoreboard.

Full article.

I read the other day (perhaps from the Arena Digest article) that since the Crunch aren't getting a scoreboard, they'd decided to cut the arena rent for the Crunch. I suspect they'd rather have the scoreboard and current rent rather than cheaper rent and a crappy scoreboard.
