Personally, I've not thought a second New York soccer team to be a viable option. They've already got the Red Bulls, which, while admittedly aren't in the best location, don't get the best attendances in the league. But now the talk surrounding the possible expansion team has piqued my interest and curiosity. Enter Fred Wilpon. That's right. The Fred Wilpon. The owner of the Mets. And the owner of a soon-to-be-vacated Shea Stadium. The historic and iconic Shea Stadium would need a bit of a makeover to return it to it's footballconfiguration (okay, soccer...close enough for jazz), but it would be a new life for the facility. Between an investor in Wilpon, a stadium in Shea, and a supporters' club in the Borough Boys, a second New York team is looking more likely. Not only would this be a boon to city soccer fans who would rather have a team in their own backyard rather than across the state line, but this would place a fifth team on the I-95 corridor and intensify the rivalries between the Revolution, Red Bulls, the Philadelphia expansion team, D.C. United, and the New York City team, not to mention create a strong city(ish) rivalry between New York City and the Red Bulls. Full article. |
