Pittsburgh 38, other team scored something less.

Some things in life just aren't as important as others.

Kickoff!
Week 1 of the NFL season has come and gone. Well...almost. And as you might expect, there is a lot to talk about. The Eagles, Steelers, and Bills all won handily, while the Jets, Patriots, and Panthers took some close wins. Sundays biggest headline? That honor (or dishonor, if you like) falls to the Kansas City-New England game. Reigning league MVP Tom Brady took a blow to the left knee during the game and limped off the field. Brady did not return, and now the Patriots' season is in question without their star leader. Backup Matt Cassel performed admirably, starting with a deep pass to Randy Moss and a touchdown pass in his first series.

How devastating is Brady's injury to the Patriots? Can the Patriots still be a playoff team without their long-time leader? Was picking Kevin O'Connell in the draft foreshadowing of expected problems with Brady's injuries? In addition, I'd like you to tell me your biggest surprise, your biggest upset, and your biggest failure to meet expectations.

You really don't want to leave the quarterback position to someone who hasn't played that much. So I say this is a pretty devastating injury to the Patriots. They still can get into the playoffs, but I don't believe they'll get very far. I don't believe picking a QB was foreshadowing the injuries. You don't want a rookie QB to play for the team if you can help it. So this was more of a pick for the future rather than for this season.

The biggest surprise was Buffalo. Not so much that they beat the Seahawks, but the complete domination they had in the game. The biggest upset is the Bears betting the Colts in the new stadium. A lot of people believed this would be a cakewalk for Indy, and it was not to be. The biggest failure to meet expectations will be Jacksonville. It's a toss between them, the Colts and the Chargers. Since I already talked about the Colts, and don't want my Chargers to be the biggest disappointment, I'm taking the Jags. This was a team that many picked to be in the Super Bowl, and at the very least the playoffs. Now it's not so certain. At least my Chargers play in the AFC West which gives them a few wins in Oakland and the Chiefs, but Jacksonville doesn't have that luxury in their division. So because of how tough the division is, the Jags will struggle.

I'm not going to say there is doom and gloom for the Patriots. Bill Belichick is the Henry Ford of the NFL: if one part breaks, it's easily replaced. Take for instance, the Patriots' first Super Bowl. Bledsoe went down, leaving the QB position to some relatively untested quarterback named Tom Brady. I suppose it worked out well for them. So it's not a big devastating injury. Does it open up the AFC even more? Sure. Are they done? Absolutely not. They can still make the playoffs and from there, anything can happen, as we've seen in previous seasons. Drafting O'Connell was not foreshadowing...if anything was, it was Brady not playing any preseason games, allowing the other QBs to have some playing time that they wouldn't have had otherwise. Now they have experience with the system, another reason why it's not doom and gloom.

The biggest surprise was Atlanta. Rookie QB on a team that struggled mightily a year ago? Going to be a rough time, right? Not quite. All they did was put up 34 points on the Lions, 21 of which came in the first quarter. Great way to start the season.

The biggest upset was the Colts losing to the Bears at home, as TDK said. Not just that the Bears won, but that it was by 16. If anyone said the final score was going to be 29-13, and not say who had what score, most, if not all, would believe the Colts would be the winners. The Bears completely shut down the Colts' running game, and cruised to victory, ending Indy's streak of winning September and October games since 2004.

The biggest disappointment is the Bengals. Carson Palmer threw for less than 100 yards. I don't care who is playing on defense, when you have the wide receivers Cinci has, there is no excuse for that. Furthermore, Flacco had a 38 yard touchdown run against the defense. That's right...the rookie QB ran almost 40 yards to the endzone. He wasn't moving all that fast either, the defense just stunk. All in all, a very disappointing effort by the Bengals on Sunday.

The injury is devastating to the Patriots, but it's not quite as bad as people seem to think. This is not a team that revolves around the star quarterback. This is not a mediocre team that is made an above-average team with a star quarterback. This is an above-average team with a star quarterback. Laurence Maroney, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Stephen Gostkowski, Tedy Bruschi, et al make up this great team. Matt Cassel has been in the Patriots system for several years now as Tom Brady's backup. He may not be Tom Brady, but he's got everything covered, and the Patriots will still be in the playoffs, and it's very likely that they'll still win the division.

Kevin O'Connell wasn't foreshadowing of injury problems, just planning for the future. Players get injured all the time, and you never see it coming. If you had told me that Brady would be injured in game one, I would have laughed at you and called you nuts. O'Connell is simply there as preparation for a future without Brady or Cassel. I mean, if Cassel gets injured in game two, the Pats have a problem and need a QB.

Surprise! The Buffalo Bills dropped the Seahawks yesterday by a scoreline that no one was particularly expecting. The Seahawks were a playoff team last year and the Bills were not, and I certainly wasn't expecting the Bills to play the way they did yesterday. Wow. The only thing to keep in mind about week one is that it's just week one. We have yet to determine if it's because the Bills are better than we thought or the Seahawks are worse than we thought.

Biggest upset: Carolina over San Diego. The Panthers have not really been a contending team since Super Bowl XXXVIII, but the Chargers have been a dominant team for several years now. Carolina scored the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds of the game to defeat the defending AFC West champions in the first game of the season. I wouldn't have guessed that at all from Carolina, so that's my big upset.

Failure: Cleveland. I know they were playing Dallas, but I was expecting a lot more out of the Browns that what I got. Romo had 320 of the team's 500 offensive yards while the Browns only mustered just over 200 yards total. They only had 11 first downs and had the ball for just over 20 minutes. They were generally dominated by the Cowboys. I know the Cowboys are good, but Cleveland wasn't bad last year, and I was expecting to see a better Browns team than the one that showed up on Sunday.
