From the Globe and Mail:
Quote:

NHL governors are talking informally about placing a second hockey team in Toronto alongside the Maple Leafs, The Globe and Mail has learned.

“Why shouldn't we put another team in the best and biggest market in the world?” one of several NHL governors who spoke with The Globe anonymously said of the Greater Toronto Area.

According to this governor, one idea floated is for prospective owner Jim Balsillie to be rewarded with an expansion team in Toronto after helping to restore financial ballast to the Nashville Predators.

“I've heard this exact scenario,” a second governor said.

Calgary Flames co-owner Harley Hotchkiss, a former chairman of the NHL board of governors, is also aware of the Balsillie movement.

“I've heard bits and pieces of this scenario, although not in that kind of detail,” he said. “Our priority is to have the existing franchises solid.”

The Maple Leafs would be furious to see another team in Toronto...and they weren't even happy to hear discussion of a team possibly relocating to southern Ontario.
Another team in Toronto? I'll say no for now.
Another team in southern Ontario? A possibility for the future...and I think the Leafs would have a bit less leverage over this than if a team were to go to Toronto.

Actually, come to think of it, there already is a second pro-level hockey team in Toronto - the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. If you put another NHL team in Toronto, you're pretty much going to have to fold or relocate the Marlies. I know Canadians like hockey, but I think two NHL teams would drown out the AHL.

Yeah, I don't believe 3 pro hockey teams would work in Toronto...especially if one is a minor league team. I'm sure they'd find a place that would accept the Marlies, maybe some of the other cities you listed, except for Winnipeg which has the AHL's Manitoba Moose.

I'd imagine having 1 of each would work in Winnipeg, just like it's worked in Chicago, Philadelphia and Toronto. Worked in this case meaning neither team had to fold yet.

Winnipeg has been begging for a franchise since the Jets left. My guess is that if a team were to relocate (personally I think Bettman doesn't want anymore expanding at the moment), they would go to Winnipeg or Kitchener/Waterloo or Hamilton. I don't see Quebec City getting back a team, plus I think the Habs would object. Atlantic Canada has no major sport teams...not even CFL, however, New Brunswick probably isn't a great market and Halifax really isn't that big (13th biggest in the country).

Well, you don't need a big city to do well. Buffalo's 68th in population in the US...they seem to be doing alright...and they are about 100,000 less than Halifax. Buffalo's population is between Windsor and Sakatoon. Get enough people in the area who are into the sport, and that's all you really need. If you're selling 20,000 tickets a game, it doesn't really matter if the population is 2,000,000 or 200,000.

Fair enough.
