Kickoff
It was a wild, wild World Series in a variety of ways, including a controversial one. The Rays won a game, but the Phillies came back to win four and the series, squashing Tampa's hopes of a miracle season. Pitcher Cole Hammels was named series MVP. However, by far the biggest story was the rainout of game five. The Phils lead 2-1 going into a wet, wet sixth before the Rays scored the tying run. The game was suspeneded in the middle of the sixth to be suspended the following Wednesday. Commissioner Selig was criticized for his handling of the matter - the game should have been called earlier, was it right for him to suspend for a nine-inning game, were they waiting for a Rays run to tie it, should the game have been played at all. All of this has lead to all sorts of speculation and comments by the talking heads of sports.

So tell me the following: how about those Rays? Did the best team win? Recap the series for me with your thoughts. In addition, what can MLB do to avoid a situation like they had? Shorter season? More double-headers? What about neutral site in warm-weather cities or domes? Did Selig get it right? And anything else you'd like to add.

The Rays did not perfom as I expected they would. The way they had been playing, it seemed that they were unstoppable. I don't think they could have won every game, but I was expecting them to take it in seven. But in the end, the best team definitely one, as in my opinion it was a very close contest.

MLB cannot avoid the situation it had. Selig was in a no-win situation here. He had to do something, but no matter what, he was going to get criticized. When you play a game where the players like good weather, you can't always have perfect weather. I totally disagree with the idea of neutral site World Series. To play seven games over the course of 10 days in one site is just not feasable. Fans can't get away for that much time, and it would be awfully expensive. Plus, there's this thing we call "tradition".A shorter season would always be good, but we all know the owners will never agree to that. Perhaps scheduling more doubleheaders during the season to bring the World Series out of late October.

And in the end, Selig got it right. You play as much as you can and hope for the best, but when you have to suspend the game, you have to suspend the game. And the idea of playing a World Series game to a full nine innings was a very good move. We all want to see a full, competitive game. Would the Super Bowl be the same if they only played three quarters? Nope. You play a championship to its fullest. Selig was right.

The Rays fizzled in the end, but they'll be right back into the mix next year. The better team certainly won, it's hard to argue against a team that won 4 out of 5.

The way to get out of the situation they had in Philadelphia is to cut back on off days in the postseason. In the regular season, a team could go 2 weeks without a break...but yet with the playoffs, it would be tough to find a series that had 3 games in 3 straight days. Get rid of the off days, and that will help reduce the risk of bad weather in the northern cities.

As it is now, I don't like the idea of neutral site series. I could see it happen if it was a one game thing, like they have in Triple-A, but for now, keep it as it is.

Selig did what he could given the circumstances. As we saw, the following day wasn't going to allow for the game to be played, so try to get as much in as you could get before the bad weather arrives. It just didn't work out that the entire game was played unfortunately. It was a no-win situation, but he did make the best of it.

Interesting comments. Buster Olney said this morning on Mike and Mike that after he tossed out the idea of a neutral site World Series, a poll showed 90% that he was a moron and 10% an idiot.

Buy/Sell
It was a wild, wild weekend in college football. #1 Texas fell to #6 Texas Tech following a comeback that appeared to seal it for the Longhorns. Now, however, the Red Raiders have not only beaten the Longhorns, but they have leapfrogged idle Penn State to take the #2 spot in the BCS. Alabama made the move up to #1. Rounding out the top five is the one-loss Longhorns and the Florida Gators, up from eighth last week.

Buy or sell this lineup as the top five, and buy or sell Alabama-Texas Tech as the Championship matchup.

I am going to sell this and all polls this week. I'm not convinced that Texas Tech should have moved up so high; I'm not convinced that Penn State should have remained at third; I'm not convinced that Texas should be as high as fourth. But by the same token, I don't think it's entirely wrong, either. There are just too many good teams vying for those top spots. I just can't say with 100% firmness that these are the teams in these spots.

I will also sell Alabama-Texas Tech for the Championship. Again, too many good teams vying for these two spots. Penn State could win out, and both Alabama and Texas Tech could lose once. There are so many variables here, even with only a few weeks to go. There is just too much flux to give a firm "yes" here.

And that's how I feel overall. There are too many variables. Too much needs to go right, and too much can go wrong. I can't possibly give you a buy until I can see the final rankings of the season.

I'll buy the top 5 as the way it should be for right now. Penn State has only beaten one ranked team in Ohio State, and comparatively, the Big Ten is not as strong as the Big 12 or SEC. So the nod should go to the unbeaten teams in those respective conferences. Texas Tech beat the #1 team in the country, so I have no problem with them jumping up for now. Alabama's and Texas Tech's body of work, at this point, is better than Penn State's, so at the moment, I'm fine with them in the top 2 spots.

I don't believe Alabama will win the SEC, they'll lose to Florida in the conference championship game, so I'm selling Texas Tech-Alabama as the national championship game.

Let's take a look at the numbers.
Alabama's best win was at #13 Georgia, it's their only currently ranked opponent they've played so far.
Texas Tech's best win was #4 Texas at home, it's their only currently ranked opponent they've played so far.
Penn State's best win was at #11 Ohio State, it's their only currently ranked opponent they've played so far.

All 3 teams are undefeated. Put Texas Tech at #1 and Penn State at #2. Then put Alabama at #3. Texas can be at #4, they had 4 ranked teams in 4 weeks, going 3-1, nothing terrible about that. Florida has dismantling teams lately, but their loss to Ole Miss at home is a little bit of a trade off at this point. I'd probably put Oklahoma at #5, since their loss was to Texas...then put Florida at #6. So I'll sell this.

I'm joining the sell party on the national championship game too. There is still too much left to be decided, especially considering the strength of the Big 12 and SEC, and that they have conference championship games. A lot of places to slip up, which you really can't afford at this stage.

Good points all around. TDK, welcome to Week 21. PSUSyr, +2 for clarifying "right now" on the top five. That makes a lot of difference in whether you buy or sell this.

Oddsmakers
Even though baseball season has recently ended, that doesn't mean that there isn't news. All season, particularly early on, there was controversy over Major League Baseball's use of maple bats. The bats were appearing to be very dangerous, prone to breakage. Rumors have been flying that the issue may come up at ownes' meetings this winter, but it is uncertain that MLB will do anything about it.

Well, now maybe they have to.

Last week, it was announced that maple bats had been banned in favor of the traditional, more solid ash bats. The independent Frontier League announced last week that it was banning the shattering maple wood sticks from league play. Now, the independent minors are just that - independent and minor. But in the world of baseball, this is a big announcement.

The question of where we go from here. Give me the odds that maple bats are banned in Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball for 2009. What are the odds that all professional baseball in the United States (affiliated and independent) goes maple-less next season?
