It's so easy to envision the details of the Islanders' Lighthouse Project sitting in a thick manila folder somewhere in the Town of Hempstead offices this morning, collecting dust in a pile of to-do items.

No way it's anywhere near the top.

The Islanders have been talking about replacing Nassau Coliseum for years, seemingly almost as long as their fans have been waiting to advance past the first round of the playoffs again.

But these days, something seems different about their case for a new arena, and it's not good. Never before has there seemed to be so much urgency in the voices of those around the Islanders about getting this done. It appears we've reached a breaking point with the project, that it better move forward soon.

Or else...

It's interesting to note that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman went on the offensive twice this past week, which should tell you something about the graveness of the situation.

I never had a problem with New York having two teams. The NFL and MLB have two teams each there. NBA only has one. The Rangers are the more valuable franchise. The Devils are probably more popular in New York than the Islanders. The Islanders haven't been successful since their 4 Cups in a row dynasty in the 80's. The franchise itself isn't well managed, year after year it's a gong show...

Well, if you're counting the Giants and Jets as New York teams, you might as well thrown in the Nets and Devils in their respective leagues. They are as much a part of NY as the NFL's teams, except for the name. ;)
